Charging Systems - Charge your batteries with small engines and other novel equipment

Ways to charge batteries using small engines and automotive alternators, will be advantageous in a small system, or for emergencies.

AURA SYSTEMS

An unusual combination product that became available recently is Aura Systems' Flywheel Alternator Starter, or FAS for short. Also marketed as AuraGenPower, it's priced at less than $1000 and is currently an aftermarket product designed to replace your car's alternator, starter, solenoid and belts. The FAS is an electromagnetic device that provides both starting and power-generating functions. It basically turns your automobile's idling engine into an electrical power generator capable of powering an entire residential home. On a smaller scale, it would be very handy on camping trips, boat outings or for anyone working in the construction business who needs power at a job site where conventional electrical power is unavailable.

The FAS is bolted directly to the engine crankshaft in place of the existing flywheel. The device initially produces enough torque to start the vehicle. Then it converts to the alternator mode, generating enough power to charge the vehicle's battery and other electrical equipment. It generates hundreds of amperes of current at 12 volts. The FAS package includes a power inverter and a standard electrical outlet, which could be placed anywhere on the vehicle. Aura Systems is currently negotiating with several auto manufacturers to incorporate the FAS system in new cars, which is estimated to add somewhere between $20 and $100 to the price of a new vehicle. -

A completed generatorWe will discuss how to build your own generator that looks something like this.

This generator was built using a 3 horse power Briggs and Stratton horizontal shaft motor, a GM 65 amp automotive alternator (with built in voltage regulator), a used car battery, a pulley and V-belt, a 12 volt cigarette lighter outlet box with fuse, a DC to AC power converter, a low voltage control switch, a scrap of 3/4" plywood, a few scraps of 2 x 4 lumber, 4 wheels, and two battery cables. We also used a custom designed bracket manufactured for Epicenter to make it all come together in a snap.

How Emergency Power Systems Work http://www.howstuffworks.com/emergency-power.htm

To the left is a simplified animation of a basic wood fired system. The fire heats a large copper coil with water in it. The water is turned into steam, and the resulting pressure runs the Steam Engine. The Steam Engine in turn, drives an AC or DC generator to provide electricity all winter. Heat from the Boiler's fire can be used to heat your home. This system is for northern climes and in Sun Belt areas such as AZ, NM, CO, TX, NV, or S. CA, the wood boiler would be replaced by our large Solar Troughs. If you live in the Sun Belt, you would never have to fire up a wood boiler. http://www.suntherm.com/
