Background Information on Unimogs
UNIMOG is a multi-purpose all wheel drive vehicle manufactured by Mercedes-Benz.
UNIMOG is an acronym derived from: UNIversal-MOtorGerät (universal-power-unit).
The first Unimog rolled out through the factory gates back on June 3, 1953. Since that day, more than 300,000 units have been built - destined for over 165 nations around the globe. http://www.unimogsales.com/The Mercedes Unimog is, without too much argument, the most capable and best Four Wheel Drive in the world!
There have been hundreds of different configurations over the years. They range in size from 4.5 ton models, up to 12.5 tons! All Unimogs are designed to tackle extreme terrain and to survive it. They are all equipped with Portal axles, meaning the axle goes into the top of the wheel, with a gear reduction system to center of the wheel. This gives them, on average, about 17 inches of ground clearance, ...and that is at the lowest point! Unlike a Hummer which is 16 or 17 inches all the way through. (They get stuck easy). The axles also have a locker, meaning that the wheels will receive power to all four. Traction is maintained, regardless of the opposite wheel's state. The Mog also has the ability to flex the frame several degrees in each direction, along with the coil springs, gives it the overall best stock suspension flexibility of any 4WD! (Some models ...even better than the Range Rover.)
The most popular models here in the U.S., are the 404, it is usually ex-Swiss Army or French, and the 406 (short wheel base) model. It was also sold by Case dealers for several years. Their model designation was known as the MB4/94 U-900, and was sold as an alternative to trailer dependent machinery! (i.e. Light duty Bulldozer, Backhoe, Tractor, etc.) They had a gear reduction box, in addition to the already low gears. The final drive was as low as 4000:1 !! (You could move a house with that.) Many had a shovel blade on the front, with a full size shovel boom on the rear. And of course, no need to load it up at the end of the day, ...you could drive your Backhoe to lunch, and then back home at night! http://www.geocities.com/Baja/Outback/9186/indexMERCMOG.html
To the left is another one of Darrin's talents - restoring Mercedes Benz Unimogs. Do you think this guy has any spare time after designing and building houses, building other outbuildings, restoring unimogs and making babys? Well, I guess so, because he does get on the air once in a while. How about that? http://www.fortunecity.com/meltingpot/libya/1008/page12.html
Short History
We at Unimog Magazine are striving to bring you quality information about one of the world's most capable off road vehicle. Whether you are lucky enough to own a Mog or simply fantasizing about becoming an owner, we hope you will find these articles of great value. It would be very easy to quote specs or rave about general concepts, but we are going to try to bring you information of sincere value. The Unimog is hot, and the last year or so has seen a dramatic increase in public interest and media exposures of our favorite machines. The benefit is clear: More Mogs = More Fun + Better Prices + New Innovations + More Events. So what now? It's time someone came out with a quality resource for everything Unimog, and that's what we plan to do. This is the features section. Keep you eyes peeled for some real interesting stuff here. I'm still waiting to get the photos for the propane powered turbo 404... this is the kind of stuff that the features section is all about. http://www.unimogmagazine.comA (Very) Brief History of the Unimog
This is a condensed version of the history given in G.W. Schramm's Unimog -- A German Legend. The Unimog was built in West Germany following WWII as a hybrid farm tractor and truck suitable for gathering the harvest and bringing it to market. The Unimog was designed with some thought to military uses that would follow the eventual lifting of post-war restrictions.
From the beginning, the Unimog was designed to use four wheels of the same size, as opposed to the standard tractor design which uses smaller front wheels. http://www.cs.brandeis.edu/~zippy/unimog-404.html
This Unimog U2450L 6x6 is seen being prepared by Mercedes Benz as a Medium Recovery Vehicle for the Australian Army. Its first tour of duty for the Army was planned to be with InterFET in East Timor.
The first of 55 Medium Recovery Vehicles (MRV) was recently handed over to "Brigadier Pat McIntosh CSC, Commander of the Brisbane based 7th Brigade". The Army has purchased "almost 2000 [...] Unimog U1700L four wheel drive trucks" since 1981. http://www.4wdonline.com/Unimog/1999.html

This is the my '66 Unimog radio truck. It served in the Bundeswehr (Germany Military) until it was decommissioned in 1995. The axel articulation is unmatched by any other stock 4x4 -- note the frame flex, causing the front bumper to droop from the cab. The cylindrical object above the cab is a gas fired heating unit to keep the box warm during the winter. It isn't functional right now, however. http://www.swcp.com/~hudson/mog/
