BackHome New York Chapter

We are the NY chapter of BackHome in America. A loose confederation of homesteaders, headed up by Bruce Kilgore.

Focus... simplicity, sustainable agriculture, alternate energy and building methods, autonomy and independance.

There are chapters through out the nation. If you want to see others go to our chapters page.

Please note that the BackHome Chapters and BackHome magazine are entirely separate entities. Our affiliation is only through common interests and goals. The ideas offered and opinions expressed on the website are soley those of the author and are not necessarily those of the website editor nor of the BackHome magazine staff. And articles and opinions expressed in the magazine are at their staffs discretion only.

Upstate New York, in the Adirondacks is absolutely beautiful in fall and early winter. A place of tranquility and abundance. With game aplenty and the harvest in, now is the time to sit back and appreciate all there is. Using wood to heat, photovoltics for electric in a self made home and eating home grown organic foods. Ahhh that is the life.

The chicken tractor, vermiculture, heavy mulch in the garden all help to make life easier and simplier.

Check us out! See what we are doing. Go to the "members efforts" link. Also see the links page for further sites of interest.

Our Charter

Some organizations have a formal charter; many do not. We have none. But we do have a common interest in homesteading...the simple life. Or some aspect of it. Getting off the grid is a big one. Also straw bale houses, sustainable agriculture and organic ways to raise crops both animal and vegetable.

History of Our Club

Dave Haig came across the BackHome Chapters website while surfing the net. It had been started by David McMillen after joining David Bonta's just formed chapter mentioned in a letter to the editor at BackHome magazine. They had no website and Bonta was mailing out a newsletter. McMillen figured that a website would save some effort and give him an education on building webs at the same time. The Northeast Chapter grew to the point that Vermont split off. Tick tock, tick tock...time passes. More inquiries came in about sites covering other ares in the country. It was decided to have several that would cover different areas until it grew too large. Then to spin off the member states just as the Northeast Chapter has done. Recently Steve Spence stepped up to bat for New York state. Well here is the NY state site and Steve is the one who will be sharing the results and experiences of our team, plus meeting a very diverse variety of people.

Our Club Officers

None. We are very informal. No dues, no obligations but a shared interest. Many members have stated that they are interested in contributing in some way or another. Some even voluntered their efforts in helping build / develop a members homestead.

We do feature articles about our members including pictures. If you are involved in a project in New York State and would like to see it acknowledged on the web let me know at: sspence@green-trust.org
